Degas: Behind the Canvas
This piece is directly inspired by the work of Edgar Degas and showcases the balletic movement that he so famously translated into paintings throughout his world-renowned career. In essence, this is my interpretation of the behind-the-scenes action that took place in the studio whilst Degas laid his brush upon the canvas.
Sing, Sing, Sing
With Benny Goodman's big-band pulsing in the background, this feel-good, jazzy ballet piece is chock full of "fancy flapper footwork" and will leave you smiling (and maybe even wanting to get up and dance, yourself!).
Becoming
Featuring juxtaposed balletic and contemporary-based movement, Becoming reflects the union of classical roots with the "here and now" of today's dance world, which so dramatically is inclined away from this sense of classicism and tradition. This piece follows a soloist dancer on her metaphorical journey to becoming a different, yet equally valuable, version of herself, bound to the foundations of ballet but opening a door to awaiting promise and further exploration.
Closed Circuit
Mirroring the strong, driving nature of Rene Aubry's score, Closed Circuit is a non-stop whirlwind of energy, constantly flowing with the intensity of an electric current.
Flight
Paired with Max Richter's "November," this work was set for competition as a junior ensemble at the 2023 Youth American Grand Prix. Flight draws inspiration from the migration of birds, playing with patterns and visual innuendos that call to mind those of wild fowl amid their journey.
Full Circle
Based upon the relationship between parent and child, Full Circle brings to light a reality of life - we begin as children, reliant on someone to nurture and guide us. In turn, we end life by reversing the roles, as parents age and this dependence shifts, as they seek the same sense of protection and advocacy formerly shown to their children. This work is dedicated to my mother.
Seasons of Li(ght)
(fe)
(mitation)
(beration)
Seasons explores the passing of time, considering the change of periods seen in the environment to mimic those faced in life as we age. From start to finish, the movements of the score, in conjunction with the lighting and dancing, itself, personify the seasons of spring (dependence), summer (connection), autumn (detachment), and winter (acceptance). This work is a tribute to my father.
